52 great things about Lake County
According to Lovie Smith

Editor’s note: This is another installment in our weekly series highlighting what people like about living in Lake County. This week, we asked the question of Bears coach Lovie Smith.

Bears coach Lovie Smith has a megabucks contract and can visit a lot of fancy places, but his tastes are simple when he steps out in his hometown in Lake County.

Smith and his family live in Lake Forest, where the Bears have been headquartered since 1979. The Big Sandy, Texas, native said one reason he enjoys Lake Forest is because it has a small-town atmosphere that he grew up in.

One place on Smith’s to-do list is Egg Harbor Cafe on Western Avenue in downtown Lake Forest.

“I mean, (I like) your typical things,” Smith said. “I eat breakfast down at Egg Harbor. One of my favorite places.

“I’m from down South, so I get your typical clog-your-arteries type of breakfast in the morning.”

Egg Harbor also has locations in Barrington, Lincolnshire, Arlington Heights, Naperville and other suburbs.

Another spot where Smith gets away from the football grind is The Lantern near Lake Forest’s downtown Metra commuter rail depot on Western Avenue.

Open since 1934, The Lantern is a pub known for its hamburgers and coziness. Don and Irene Tiffany have operated the joint since 1975.

Despite the stellar reputation of The Lantern’s burgers, Smith said he prefers something else on the menu.

“I’m a chili guy,” he said.
